I’m replaying final fantasy xiii-2 and it’s so sad seeing how optimistic and earnest the characters are when Lightning Returns exists and you know how it’s going to end. Serah is constantly saying “we’ll save the future and stop Chaos from entering our world” and I’m sorry sweetie but you fail. you fail completely and then you die. Noel becomes so overcome with grief at his failure to save her that he falls into depression for 500 years. Hope dedicates his entire life to his new Cocoon project and names it after the God that ends up torturing him and then possessing his body.

The paradox ending (non-canon/bad ending/dream of Serah's) from Final Fantasy XIII-2 being very similar to the above scene from Kingdom Hearts II, that came out years before. A.K.A. I think this was a Kingdom Hearts II reference.

within the dying world, there was barely anyone left. with only caius, noel, yeul and you living there, it was no surprise that caius and you ended up falling for one another

and your brother was supportive of your relationship with caius, as noel looked up to caius and saw him as a friend

life in the dying world wasn't the best, but as long as you had caius and were with your two friends, then everything would turn out fine, wouldn't it?

well, when caius suddenly left without a warning, that little peace you knew was suddenly ripped away from you. shortly after, yeul died too and you and your brother were transported to valhalla

the caius you saw there was nothing like the man you knew. at least, that's what you told yourself. that caius was a good person, not just some villain!

yet whenever you crossed paths with caius on your journey, you were left to wonder if caius was still the man you once fell in love with

as noel slowly gave up on caius, fully viewing him as a villain and determined to stop him, you desperately clung to the belief that caius would change again one day

that he might have a reason for all he was doing. that it was a good reason! that he was trying his best for a better world, for you and him to live in! but only caius could truly know what was going on in his head…

I actually hate how much both Serah and Noel promise to keep Serah safe.

We all know how that ends, we can't make promises we can't keep, guys 😭🙏🏼

Neither of them could save her. Serah couldn't save herself and Noel couldn't save her either, but they sure talk a whole lot about how they could.

Like, Serah promises all of NORA that she'll come back safe, and she even promises that little boy who steals her necklace if you go talk to him more. Noel promises all of NORA as well that she'll be okay, and from what I remember he keeps promising throughout the game to others as well. And he goes on their little quest, and she dies.

(I know they weren't thinking about the things I already know from previous playthroughs in the beginning, but I gotta be dramatic over everything.)

(and yes, I have the whole ending scene downloaded on my phone. My obsession goes hard with this game.)
